Did they take my advice?
The band from the 2nd most viewed video on my channel is BACK. These guys sent in a rehearsal tape of their original song, "Grass", asking for some constructive criticism. I listened through and offered several bits of advice. If you haven't seen that video, the link is below. Well, it's been about a year, and the band (named Comfort Shag) has gone into a local studio to record their record. It is fully finished and available at the link below. So, did they take my advice?

There's a lot packed into this little pedal: a Super Sport (Barber's Marshall/Tweed Twin drive) and a Burn Unit (Barber's take on the famed Dumble overdrive tone). Options for clipping and compression round out the features. It sounds REALLY great, and it is going straight to my new board. I'll do a video once it is done. Thanks for watching! My rig is...

DETHRONED: swapping out the king of all speakers

I used to absolutely HATE this 80s tone

I can’t seem to get enough of 80s Strat tones these days. From cleaner, percussive out of phase sounds (like what you’ll hear in this video) to the bigger chorus’d out compressed sounds (upcoming video), they just fit in a mix SO well. And I used to absolutely loathe these sounds. Now, I use them to great effect in my day to day job of playing guitar on songs. So, here’s what I have today: Subs...

    Speaking as a bass player who did a lot of session work, if you want to work simplicity is the key. Honestly no producer or session leader will be impressed with your 16th note pentatonic runs and it’s more likely to get you fired and off the contractor’s list forever. UA-cam is full of these guys who wonder why their phones aren’t ringing for top session work. Do that stuff with your own band or in your bedroom if you want. But the most iconic bass lines are brilliant in their simplicity and that to me is where the true art of the instrument lies - not in trying to imitate a guitar player. I always use Abe Laboriel as the quintessential example of a player with immense chops who puts that all away when he’s doing commercial recording for others. Yet he does it in a way that is memorable. Nate East is in that class as well. That’s why they are household names amongst bassists and that’s true bass genius!

    My best year in LA as a session player during the 80s was about $75k. Mostly doing movie and TV soundtracks, radio and jingle work and demos through mainly one contractor who really liked me. I studied privately as a teen with Max Bennett and he introduced me into that business. Then whatever other kind of gigs I got called for on the evenings. No road gigs then. They didn’t pay the bills and would wear you down. You’d also find your studio work gone when you got back which did pay the bills - at least until synths starting replacing a lot of bass players. I totally got burned out on all of it for a while. Went to law school. Became an entertainment attorney to make my money and could then just take the gigs I really enjoyed. Through some very cool coincidences I ended up getting James Jamerson’s old chair touring with the Motown group The Miracles. That was a dream gig for me as JJ was my bass hero. But even that got to be a bit of a grind after a few years. I was lucky to have made enough money to retire as an attorney at 50. Since then I only play with bands I put together myself playing the music I like with musicians I get along with. I really don’t envy the younger players these days going through the grind of the music business. It had its great moments and I got to play with amazing players, but the business does not treat us kindly which was a big motivation for me becoming an entertainment lawyer and advocate for the artist.

  • @BillonBass

    I spent my early career doing sessions in LA during the 80s until I simply got burned out on it. I was classically trained then on to Berklee. For me getting better was always about being pragmatic and consistently pushing myself to learn something new every day. I’m 64 now and still doing it. I remember coming to Nashville back in the early 80s to do a session at the old Columbia Studio A. It was fun. But I understand from friends there it’s changed a lot and become very cutthroat. That’s the way LA was and why a lot of guys left the town and the business back in the day.

    That guy sounds just like Billy Ocean singing "Caribbean Queen." Are you sure they aren't ranking you?

  •  День тому

    Regarding comments, unfortunately there are some musicians who view music as a competition. The guy who wrote "its sucks" probably has written or played some of his own music, which the majority of us would think "boy that really SUCKS". Fact is that some people think the Beatles "suck" or any other band. Everybody who puts their music out has haters, as well as fans. My response to a guy like that its "OK....where are your songs?...lets hear them". That usually quiets them down.

    Hope this is constructive. I feel the vocal is being delegated to be just another element of the arrangement rather than being the dominent element that the other elements are centered around. The vocal is sung very well and should be considered the selling point of the song IMO.There seems to be too much focus on the guitar bits. It would be interesting to hear a stripped down mix. As an excersize I would come up with an arragement that is three minutes in length. Being a Dad rocker myself, I like to think of the way 1960's classic hits were arranged and produced (not that it has to sound retro) as a template. The song is good. Made me think of The Atlanta Rhythm Section, a band we all remember from the 70's.

  • @10bbremer
    @10bbremer 2 дні тому

    I think the slower version allows for the vocal to be more soulful. The singer is very good. When you have a skilled singer, your job is to mostly stay out of the way. The sped up keys intro sounds rushed and way too busy. It works better in the slower version. It is a very good composition. Well done, dads!

    Even if the tempo increase works (have a bias since I heard the slower version first), I don’t think using the exact same lick on the intro works. It feels rushed. overall melodic concept works, but some of the pick up notes feels incredibly rushed. It’s like they sped it up, but tried to play everything exactly the same, not sure that really works well.

    Making notes as I listen (hopefully constructive!): -More concise sections: good! -Lyrics have too many perfect rhymes (and the same vowel sound): runs the risk of being boring/predictable... try varying rhyme schemes! --also kind of vague/cliche. I'd get more specific about the situation so people can relate better and hopefully picture themselves in it. -Chorus has a dynamic shift; good! But vocal melody is basically in the same register & has similar phrasing, which makes it blend into the verse and easy to forget. -Gnarly solo tone! Works well for those slow burning licks, but gotta be conscientious when playing fast on the lower strings bc it gets muddy --also take care to match dynamics and play ideas that make sense into each other; 2nd half seemed like an obvious punch-in

  • @RICO_SUAVE21
    @RICO_SUAVE21 3 дні тому

    I think it a good song at its core and I really like the singer’s voice. I like the speeded up version better than the original slow version. I think the song should start off a little slower and then speed up after the first verse with the vocalist and musicians staying out of each other’s musical space. I didn’t like the guitar solo, it seemed to take away from the song..

  • @stepitupandgo67

    Awesome tones... I have a blues deluxe, which sounds great, (not quite as great as yours, it must be vintage) but as soon as I used the preamp out of my deluxe into my satellite cuda amp, I'm in love with the sound. I hoped that was going to be one of your 5 things to do...., but that's a great thing to mess with. Especially if you have what I have, the satellite has only volume and tone, no verb, so you get the eq and verb of the deluxe, and just a little something too that's more than the sum of it's parts. I'm curious if other people have used this setup...I heard there was a thing with a fender amp into a satellite, but can't find much about it online...it's a bit more to lug around gigging, but it's been worth it. Guitar players always comment on my tone

    Absolutely and I dig that you're very diplomatic with all of this and open minded. I've toured, done session work, production, some engineering over the past 30 years. In many genres. I will say that from my personal experience only, that some of the key factors in my continued work within the business, are having intuition while in a session, and being a good hang, got me much further and more gigs than playing the way I did when I was was younger. Which was much more focused on Modality, dexterity, etc. My first good band taught me alot, as well as session work, especially in Nashville. I do believe that these experiences have been such a gift in my life, and prepared me for what I'm lucky enough to be able to continue doing. The truth is, I tell any young musician that is serious, and I can spot has some serious drive to Write, tour, or really anything within the business, to get there butt to Nashville for a while. I learned alot and am thankful for my time in NY, L.A., Chicago, but Nashville and the crazy talented engineers, musicians, songwriters, are the pinnacle for me. I would learn 5 or 6 new things in each session. How to conduct myself in a professional manner. How to play what was needed and the song called for, rather than what my ego wanted to play. We all have them. Lol. I will say that my guitar playing specifically really felt fresh and new to me as I spent time there. It's where I learned the number System, and realized the uses and power of that. I'm rambling now, but I'll just end it with this. When I would play a Joe Satriani piece, a few were impressed. And I of course appreciated the support. When I learned how to play in the pocket, with the right tone for the song, with intention, leaving space, I got paid well and people called me back. Not a knock on any of the amazing players that just fly around the frets, those guys are unreal. :) I just found I personally enjoyed playing less notes, leaving room to breathe, and just being a part of something beautiful, whether it was an Indie release, A single for a Major, or anything in between. The thought of Modes or any of what I practiced for thousands of hours really went through my mind or do these days. A vibe. A great part. A great tone. This is all subjective on my end, but I do feel honored to have been and to still be a part of these things. Love your vids man, and your playing is right up my alley. Rock on brother. ✌✌

    This is the kind of thing that's really missing from UA-cam in the guitar community. Songwriting - arrangement - structure. At the end of the day you can know every scale and every riff but if you can't write a song what good is it? I really like these type of videos. They are so useful and insightful. I got some great tips from your feedback on this song. Would love to see more of this type of thing. Really appreciate it Justin!! Also kudos to Comfort Shag for writing a great song.

    I really dig the singers tone and phrasing. The Vanessa Carlton piano intro can go. I’d turn the “chorus” into a bridge and use the guitar hook to craft a pop chorus. Lastly, I would recut the gtr solo to fit the song.

    I actually prefer the faster version.

    Yeah first thing I thought was how poor the mix is, but that's probably not their fault. I probably would have split the difference on the tempo. Guitar solo tone was WAY wrong for this, and also mixed badly, and I'd have suggested a different take on it, personally. Perfectly decent song otherwise.

    Lets remember that there are 4 or 5 people involved, and getting them all to agree to making necessary changes is an animal all it's own. The next animal is writing a song everyone will like.. I would like to say this song has real potential. I think guitar fills in between vocals would serve the song in a much better way. The guitar tone in the solo needs to be revisited with a tone that fits the vibe and the solo needs to say what the vocals are saying in a more passionate melodic manner. Like I said, this song has real potential if you can clean up some small problem spots.
